The double ouroboros is an ancient symbol distinct from that of the single ouroboros. A single ouroboros is a circle formed by a serpent, often a snake, consuming its own tail. A double ouroboros is a more complicated symbol formed by a pair of twisted serpents consuming one another's tails, as an emblem of wholeness or infinity. The symbols forming Pharoah Ramses III's royal cartouche contains a double ouroboros. Some scholars suggest that the infinity symbol is derived from the double ouroboros. The auryn amulet central to the plot of 'The Neverending Story' is a double ouroboros.
